OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso (AP) — Burkina Faso and French forces killed four extremists Saturday and freed more than 126 people to end the seizure of a luxury hotel by al-Qaida-linked militants, Burkina Faso officials said. In addition to the four jihadists, at least 23 people were killed in the attack at the Splendid Hotel and a nearby cafe in Ouagadougou, the capital, the president said. Three attackers were killed at the hotel and a fourth was killed when security forces cleared out a second hotel nearby.

Oil thieves jailed for 84 yrs

Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court in Lagos yesterday convicted seven men to 84 years imprisonment for illegal and unlawful dealing in 1,459 metric tonnes of petrol. The court sentenced each of the convicts to a jail term of 12 years each starting Friday after they were all found guilty of the five count charge preferred against them.

The convicts are; Adedamola Ogungbayi; Olaniran Olabode; Suraju Gasali; Moses Emmanuel; Wilson Bonsi; Okaraodi Uche and Onyeogo Happy. Apart from the jail term, Justice Abang also  ordered the forfeiture of the vessel, ‘MT Good Success’, used by the convicts in stealing the said petroleum product, as well as the recovered petroleum product to the Federal Government.

The judge also ordered the forfeiture of the sums of N66.6m and $975,000 which belonged to the convicts’ company, Hepa Global Energy Limited, domiciled with the First City Monument Bank to the Federal Government.

The convicts, were arraigned alongside their vessel and company on August 28, 2014 on five counts alongside one Padoun Jacob, who was discharged and acquitted by the court. The judge, in setting Jacob free on all the five counts, described him as a desperate job seeker, who became a victim of circumstances.

Survivors: Boko Haram killing and kidnapping in villages

Boko Haram survivors say Boko Haram extremists bombed out of forest camps are attacking remote northeast Nigerian villages, killing scores and kidnapping hundreds of women, children and young men. Farmer Muhammad Ali says militants armed with guns and swords took away his wife and two daughters, aged 9 and 3, from Abbacheri village.

He is among 400 refugees who say the attacks started a week ago and they walked for six days to reach safety. A police officer says at least four ailing and malnourished children have died among refugees in Jakana, a village 40 kilometers (25 miles) west of Maiduguri city.

Nigeria's air force has been bombarding camps in Sambisa Forest as soldiers launched a ground offensive.

Major events so far: The plane was mainly carrying Russian tourists.  150 bodies have been found over a 3 mile radius. A criminal investigation has now been launched against the airline. 2 black boxes have been recovered. According to Mirror Online, an ISIS group has claimed it shot down the Russian plane, despite early indications it was a technical problem that caused the disaster and there was no survivors' in the crash.
