2,000 widows, divorcées in Kano’s mass wedding

Kano – The Kano State Hisba Board on Tuesday said it had commenced preparations for the mass wedding of another batch of 2,000 widows and divorcees in the state. The Director-General of the Board, Dr Abba Sufi, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano.

Sufi said the preparations followed recent directive by Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje to the Board to start arrangement for the wedding of another batch of 2,000 couples.

“The governor recently directed us to start preparations for the wedding of another set of widows and divorcees.

“So, the Board has since commenced preparations for the event, expected to take place before the end of the year.’’

The director-general said the Board intended to introduce some innovations to improve on its programmes with a view to addressing other challenges. He said the present administration was determined to sustain the programme in view of its benefits to the society.

“The aim of the programme is to check prostitution and other vices in the society, hence the decision of government to sustain it,’’ Sufi said. He urged prospective couples to cooperate with the Board in order to ensure the success of the programme.

It would be recalled that no fewer than 5,000 couples had so far benefitted from the government- sponsored mass wedding programme introduced by former Gov. Rabi’u Kwankwaso in May 2012.

Supreme Court dismisses Wike’s suit against election tribunal

The Supreme Court has thrown out the jurisdiction suit filed by Governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike, against the tribunal that nullified his election The Rivers tribunal had on Saturday sacked Wike as governor, and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct fresh elections within 90 days. 

Wike challenged the ruling, stating that a tribunal sitting in Abuja had no jurisdiction over issues of Rivers state. In its ruling of Tuesday, the Supreme Court stated that the tribunal had jurisdiction to handle the trial and hear the petition of Peterside. 

It ruled that the shift in location of the tribunal from Rivers to Abuja was out of necessity, and added that it was within the Appeal Court President’s prerogative to order for the relocation.

Wike’s suit was therefore dismissed for lack of merit.

‘I haven’t seen any movie worth doing in years’ – Genevieve Nnaji

Nollywood actress, Genevieve Nnaji has ascribed her infrequent acting to a lack of quality movie scripts in circulation. Genevieve says she needs to be drawn to a story before she can be able to bring the character to life. In a recent interview with Encomium magazine, the superstar actress said she hasn’t found any movie worth doing in the past few years

“I didn’t take a break. Yes you haven’t seen me in any film but it is not my doing. I read at least three or four scripts a week for the past five years. That is to show you how bad it is. I am very careful when it comes to what I take part in.”

“There is so much or nothing you can do to convince me. I have to love a story so that I can bring it to life. It is not a one man band. The story needs to entice. The character needs to be appealing and then, you are one with it. With that, it becomes easy to be a good actor.”

Genevieve added that she wouldn’t embark on any project that’s not better than her last job.

“If I don’t get a good script, I am not going on set. I haven’t seen anything worth my while in years, that is the truth. I don’t know who did what we did in the 90s. If you can’t beat your last job, what is the point? You might as well take a bow but I am not bowing out yet.”

‘Come out of cultism before it’s too late’ | Father Mbaka warns Enugu judges

Controversial Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka of Adoration Ministries, has warned judges in Enugu State to shun cultism or face dire consequences. Mbaka gave the warning during a holy mass,organised to mark the beginning of Enugu State Judiciary Legal Year.

The cleric alleged that some judges in the state belong to secret societies, for protection and also to have success in their careers.

“If any of you is in any secret society, you had better come out of it before it is too late. You don’t need such things. Those who join them never enjoy their last days. You are never protected.

They may promise you favour but that comes from God alone. So, depend on Him because He is the Chief Judge.”

“One thing with such secret societies is that they will never tell you what the end of it is like, they will show you the part you think is good but when you enter, you will be finished.

When justice is denied, God is not happy. Many people in the prison today are there because of what they know nothing about; maybe because of lies told against them.”

“Whatever you do in the court will come back to your family; if you are unjust in the court, maybe one day, one of your children will be jailed or even killed.”

It’s not the safest idea. But life is short. It’s not autobiographical. Brad and I have our issues, but if the characters’ [problems] were even remotely close to our problems we couldn’t have made the film.”

Brad, on Angelina’s charity work: “Let’s be honest, people do this to benefit their image. When I try to make what she does more public, she is always very shy. She prefers to be with refugees, visit the families and do it without media. Which I tell you is uncommon. As you know, many celebrities are weak on details of the problem, and the devil is in the details.”
