For iPhone users who weren’t able or willing to upgrade to the most recent version of the phone, the wait can be excruciating. But in the meantime, at least we have concept art.

One of the con men Adanemhen was arrested by the police and was force to lead them to his partner in crime Obasuyi, of Friern Road, East Dulwich, who was about to board a plane from London to Lagos, Nigeria.

Court remands 12 oil thieves nabbed by Navy

Oil workers at work
A Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday ordered the prison remand of a gang of 12 oil thieves at the Ikoyi Prison. The accused are Christopher Okorie, John Mbah, Tammy Bami, Osi Prince, Chukwuji Festus, Kabiru Adeyemo and Ayannubi Moses. Others are Sopuruchukwu Chukwudi, Obinna  Ebu, Abdullahi Oyelade, Charles Ubey and Achia Vincent.

The remand order was made by Justice Muhammed Idris after the accused were arraigned before him along with their companies Phonic Marine Services Limited and  Banquet Chambers Nigeria Limited, as well as their vessel named MV PSV DEBY. They were arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on four counts of the alleged offence.

The gang was said to have been rounded up by the Nigerian Navy at about 3.22am on September 3, last year, at Alero Turning Base, near Bakaris jetty. They were allegedly caught in possession of 600,000 litres of Automated Gasoline Oil, otherwise known as diesel, loaded in their vessel named, MV PSV DEBY. The prosecution told the judge that the accused dealt in the product without a valid licence or any lawful authorisation.

The accused were charged with the offences of conspiracy, forgery and illegal dealing in petroleum products.
EFCC counsel, M. F. Owebe, said they acted contrary to  Section 3(6) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act Cap M17, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2014 and were liable to punishment under Section 1(17) (a) of the same Act. The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the four counts levelled against them.

Following their plea, the prosecutor urged the court for a short adjourned date to open trial and equally applied that the accused be remanded in the prison custody pending trial. The accused lawyers, Mr. V. C. Ude  and A. A. Adetunji, however, informed the court that they had filed bail applications for the accused persons and equally needed a short date for hearing.

After entertaining the parties, Justice Idris adjourned till January 26 to hear the bail applications of the accused persons. He ordered their prison remand pending the hearing of the bail applications.

Drug trial leaves one person brain-dead, five injured

A “serious accident” during a drugs trial in France has left one person brain-dead and five hospitalised, Health Minister Marisol Touraine said Friday. She said the six had been taking part in a “trial of an oral medication being developed by a European laboratory” in the northwestern city of Rennes, the AFP reported.

According to a source close to the case, the drug was a painkiller containing cannabinoids, an active ingredient found in cannabis plants. “A serious accident took place,” the minister said, adding that the study had been halted and all volunteers taking part recalled. The incident occurred on Thursday.

The study was a Phase I clinical trial, in which healthy volunteers take a prototype medication to “evaluate the safety of its use, tolerance and pharmacological profile of the molecule”, the minister added in a statement. It was not clear how many people were taking part in the study.

Clinical trials typically have three phases to assess a new drug or medical innovation for safety and effectiveness. Human participation in such trials and scrutiny by outside watchdogs are essential for getting market authorisation. Phase I involves a small group of volunteers, and focuses only on safety.

Phase II and Phase III are progressively larger trials, typically involving hundreds or thousands of volunteers, to assess the drug’s effectiveness although safety remains paramount. The Paris prosecutor’s office said an investigation had been opened. Touraine said she was determined to “shed light on” what happened. She has also called for an inspection of the research site.

Every year thousands of volunteers, often students looking to make extra money, take part in such clinical trials which are seen as safe. Mishaps are relatively rare, but in 2006 six men were hospitalised in London after taking part in a clinical trial into a drug developed to fight auto-immune disease and leukaemia.

In gene therapy, setbacks have included the death of an 18-year-old US volunteer, Jesse Gelsinger, in 1999, and the development of cancer among two French children treated for “bubble baby” syndrome, a chronic lack of immune defences.

Pakistani boy cuts off own hand after blasphemy mistake

A 15-year-old Pakistani boy cut off his own hand believing he had committed blasphemy, only to be celebrated by his parents and neighbours for the act, police told AFP Friday.

Local police chief Nausher Ahmed described how an imam told a gathering at a village mosque that those who love the Prophet Mohammad always say their prayers, then asked who among the crowd had stopped praying. Mohammad Anwar, 15, raised his hand by mistake after apparently mishearing the question.

The crowd swiftly accused him of blasphemy so he went to his house and cut off the hand he had raised, put it on a plate, and presented it to the cleric, the police chief said. The incident took place at a village in Hujra Shah Muqeem district, some 125 kilometres (77 miles) south of Lahore, the capital of Punjab province, about four days ago, according to the policeman.

Ahmed said that he has seen a video in which the boy is greeted by villagers in the street as his parents proclaim their pride.

No complaint has been made, he said, so no police report has been filed and there will be no investigation.
Blasphemy is a hugely sensitive issue in Pakistan, an Islamic republic of some 200 million, where even unproven allegations frequently stir mob violence and lynchings.

Critics including European governments say the country’s blasphemy laws are often misused to settle personal scores.

Guardian burns boy’s body with iron in Lagos.

A trader simply identified as Mama Sarah, pictured far right, has been accused of burning with hot Iron, the body of a 12 year old boy, Micheal Maduagu, who is under her custody at her residence at the Bar Beach area in Lagos.

The Nation reports that Neighbors and fellow traders of Mama Sarah, a cleaner with the Nigerian Naval Dockyard, say she is known to usually beat the little boy with all sorts of dangerous weapons such as Hot iron, blade, and others.
The Executive Director of Rural and Urban Development Initiative (RUDI), a pressure group, Musbau Agbodemu, said the matter was first reported to his Ebute Meta, Lagos office on Tuesday January 12th, by Mama Sarah's fellow trader. He said he has reported the matter to the Lagos state Ministry of Woman Affairs and Poverty Alleviation
“The boy is now in their custody. When he was brought to our office, he wasn’t in a good state. His body is full of scars and bruises. He couldn’t talk much because of fear. I learnt she brought him to Lagos with the pretext of taking care of him after his father’s death. I just pray this matter will be treated with utmost urgency because she was summoned on Wednesday” he said.
 A neighbour of Mama Sarah:
"I moved to Bar Beach six years ago and I got to know Mama Sarah through Michael. He was always sad. I mostly saw him on the expressway selling fuel. Things I cannot lift, Michael will lift it. There was a time I bought him food; I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw the woman eating the food. The boy once pleaded with me to take him home but I couldn’t because I didn’t want to be accused of kidnapping. So, I asked him to report his guardian to Bar Beach Police Station but they didn’t take his matter serious. Most times she accuses him of stealing but I know he is not a thief. There was a day Sarah, her daughter, beat him with a stick. It was when I couldn’t continue to see the boy suffer I took him to RUDI. There is nothing she cannot use to beat him. At times, she used naked wire, hot knife and put grinded pepper on his wound. She is that mean. I personally went to her place of work to report to her boss. I don’t know the reason they haven’t come to pick her. Is it until she escapes? I think she also needs to be tortured to know how it feels” she said.
Also speaking, Destiny Francis who resides in the area as well said
“I was shocked when I heard that she uses hot knife on boy’s legs. Three of her own children left her when her trouble was too much. It is just her last born that lives with her and that one is something else. She sometimes beat her mother. I want justice to prevail.”
Further investigation into the matter by the state police is ongoing

Photos: Farmer squeezed 2 goats out of a snake

The video showed the man squeezing two goats out of a boa constrictor after the snake swallowed them whole. The footage, shot on a roadside in Kerala, South India, showed the man pressing on the animal's swollen stomach to release the two goats. He grabbed the huge snake and wrestled with it, risking his life as he pushed and pulled the dangerous 6ft python between his legs as shocked onlookers watched him force out the snake's meal. Amazingly, the legs of one of them appeared as he continued to push the rest of its body out.

Once one of the goats was free, the other started to give way and the man, holding onto its head, successfully managed to get both out.

The unnamed farmer was trying to save the lives of the animals, which was a huge source of income in the area.Despite his best efforts to save the goats, both of them died before they were released. It is not known what happened to the python.

‘Power Rangers’ Actor Faces Life In Prison Over 2015 Murder

Almost a year after Josh Sutter died from a sword stabbing, Ricardo Medina was picked up today by the L.A. Sheriff’s department for the killing of his then roommate. The former Power Rangers star has now been charged with murder by the L.A. County District Attorney’s office. If convicted of the one count, the actor could face from 26-years to life in prison for the death of Sutter on January 31, 2015.

Presently being held in custody, Medina is scheduled to be arraigned on January 19 in the Antelope Valley Branch of the L.A. County Superior Court. L.A. D.A. Jackie Lacey’s office say they will ask at that hearing for bail to be set at $1 million. Deputy D.A. Tannaz Mokayef with the Major Crimes Division is handling the case. Medina and Sutter were supposedly arguing over personal matters when the stabbing occurred.

Medina played Cole Evans AKA the Red Wild Force Ranger in the 2002 Power Rangers Wild Force series seen on FOX Kids and ABC Kids. He returned to the Power Rangers brand, which had been bought back from Disney by Haim Saban, in 2011 for Power Rangers Samurai. That season of the Power Rangers was actually split in two with Power Rangers Super Samurai making up the second set of 20-episodes in 2012.

Though taken in for the murder back on the last day of January last year, Medina was let go after a court hearing because case was rejected. At the time, the D.A.’s office said it would the matter was still being investigated and would not rule out charges down the line. “I’m very, very, very sorry for what occurred,” Medina said at the time of his release last February. “I’m very happy to be out of jail, and my heart goes out to the Sutter family.” While the investigation by the Sheriff’s department is ongoing, the D.A.’s office obviously felt they had enough evidence now to make an arrest and lay charges.

Car that was frozen solid along Lake Erie is finally free

HAMBURG, N.Y. --  A car that was encased in ice along the shore of Lake Erie earlier this week has finally been freed.

The combination of high winds, cold temperatures, and a still unfrozen Lake Erie, spelled trouble for the owner of a car parked outside Hoak's Lakeshore restaurant on Sunday afternoon.

By Monday morning the little Mitsubishi had been turned into an ice sculpture from the spray of the water. It quickly became a bit of a tourist attraction as folks passing by stopped to snap a picture of the frozen car.
A car crew was able to free the car from its ice shield and tow it away.

Lenny Iwanenko, of Lake Erie Towing & Recovery, said it took 350 pounds of calcium flake and a towing apparatus get the car out.

"First I've encountered in 28 years of being in an industry for something of that magnitude," he said.

Iwanenko said his company will defrost the car, give it a wash, and likely return it to its owner with little to no damage.

Breastfeeding Police Officer Saves Abandoned Newborn’s Life

A police officer went above and beyond the call of duty to save a baby’s life.

Officer Luisa Fernanda Urrea, who recently became a mom herself, was called to a scene in a remote forest in Colombia after an abandoned infant was found. A local woman, Edinora Jimenez, discovered the crying baby in the undergrowth of the forest. “I was collecting some oranges when I heard something crying,” Jimenez told a local news source, as reported by the Huffington Post Thursday.

She added, “I thought it was a cat until I looked closer and saw that it was a baby girl.”

The infant, who still had part of her umbilical cord attached, was starving and facing hypothermia, so Urrea breastfed her, saving her life. “I’m a new mother and I have milk, and I recognized the needs that this poor little creature had,” Urrea told the local news. “I think any woman would have given her nourishment in the same circumstances.”

The Colombian Family Welfare Institute is now caring for the infant while it finds an adoptive home for her. In the meantime, police are searching for the mother, who may face criminal charges. Orphanage director Jhon Arley Murillo said, “We could be dealing with a case of attempted homicide, although it’s the prosecutor who will decide the charge.”
