Sector IV sees the writer deliver a romantic communal tale from the era of the Nigerian Civil war.
Abigail Anaba, who will take Sector IV on tour in October, recently had a sit-down with YNaija, to harp on the book.
Give us a brief history of your writing background
I started writing about 15 years ago. I watched a movie and said, “I can write a movie script that will be a spinoff of this.” So I bought a ream of paper and sat and wrote all through that weekend. It took me three days to finish. Then I wondered what to do with it. So I went to Aquila Njama and asked him to please read my script and he did and liked it and got me my first writing gig. I have worked with a number of producers afterwards including Chisom Ozlee, Morris Sesay, Yinka Akanbi and Jemila Musa then with Koga studios… mostly television and movies. So I thought why not carry over screenwriting to prose and tell a story that will make people feel they are watching a movie and here we are.
What inspired the writing of Sector IV?
My mum. She is late now. She told an unforgettable tale of Biafra and I wanted to preserve it in some way. I didn’t want people to just think of violence and death when they hear Biafra. I wanted them to remember that there were people with lives who lived in South East Nigeria at that time and not everyone liked or supported the war. Some were just caught in the middle and they also have a tale to tell.
What sort of response have you gotten so far from the publication?
I must say the response has been overwhelming. I have had people call to tell me that they could not put down the book once they started. Some have talked about the emotions they felt while reading. One person in particular said he felt like he was watching a movie as he read and that really made me happy. Everyone’s feedback has been great. The worst feedback I got rated the book 3.5 and to me that’s not bad at all. High point was when I sent the book to Chief Dilibe Onyeama and he described the book as a “masterpiece”. It is one thing for friends to say your work is great but that from a stranger? I was exhilarated.
The response gotten, is it as you expected?
To be absolutely honest, I wasn’t expecting the kind of response I am getting. I have never really thought so highly of my writing and even now it feels surreal. But what can I say, it should only get better.
How did you settle for the subject-matter of romance intertwined with the historical traditions/culture of the Igbos?
Well, we all live and love. I have always believed that every story must have a heart and what better way to touch the heart than talking about matters of the heart. I didn’t want to write a Biafra story but I wanted to talk about Biafra in a way. I guess it came to me, the way a dream comes to you…sneaking up into your subconscious and then sometimes becoming so overpowering that you wake up remembering every detail.
Many writers often times, mix a bit of realism with fiction to create a great literary work. Was that the case for you?
Art is life and life is art. I think one writer said that. I don’t think it is really possible to write without it reflecting an aspect of life. Even science fiction reflects lie. So yes, I did borrow from life to write this. But like Oscar Wilde says, “truth is stranger than fiction”.
What was the response like on social media, where you have a decent following?
The responses I have received so far have all been through various social media channels. The book is not available through traditional channels yet. We are waiting till after the official presentation which will hold beginning of December.
Do you intend to promote the book, via a book tour?
Definitely. The first is scheduled for October in Lagos and another in Abuja in November. We are also hoping to visit Enugu and maybe Ibadan and Port Harcourt.
Sector IV has so far gotten good reviews- will that have a great impact on your follow-up?
They say to whom much is given, much is expected. So yes, I think I have set the bar and I can’t afford to go below that bar. I can only get better.
Do you think the story of Biafra has been well told, thus far?
It has been told and will still be told. There has been so much talk about Biafra in recent times with Radio Biafra and all. I think more people need to talk about Biafra especially the older generation who lived through the war. War is bad and does not lead to any good, just death and destruction but when men’s ego is involved they always resort to fighting. I believe the more people talk objectively about Biafra the better for everyone. Biafra may not be the Sector IV some people think it is.

IN KADUNA: DEPUTY GOVERNOR BAGS TRADITIONAL TITLE
Kaduna State Deputy Governor, Mr Barnabas Bala, was conferred with the traditional title of Moro’a Chiefdom in Kaura Local Government Area of the state.
Bala was conferred with the Jarman Moro'a by the Chief of Moro'a, Malam Tagwai Sambo, on Friday.
Conferring
the title on the deputy governor at his palace in Manchok, Sambo said
that the recipient was honoured with the title for his contribution to
the development of the Moro’a community.
He urged
him to continue in the same spirit to sustain the pace of development in
the land, particularly now that he serves as deputy governor of the
state.
Sambo urged him to uphold the virtues of
truth and discipline in the discharge of his responsibilities as the son
of the land and as the deputy governor of the state.
The royal father assured him of the community’s continued prayers for him to succeed and make a difference.
Responding,
Bala, who hailed from the chiefdom and also a member of the ruling
family, thanked the traditional council for the honour, confidence and
trust bestowed upon him.
“I will, to the best of abilities, contribute my quota to the development of Moro’a Chiefdom, the state and the country.
“I
assure the good people of Moro’ a land, my home, my people, that the
confidence you have bestowed upon me will not be betrayed, ‘’ Bala said.
The
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Bala is a former Chairman of
Kaura Local Government Area and a one-time member of the House of

OSHIOMOLE; EDO STATE GOVERNOR TELLS CHIEF OGBEMUDIA TO QUIT POLITICS
Gov Adams Oshiomhole of Edo has advised former Governor of the Defunct Bendel State, Dr Samuel Ogbemudia, to retire from active politics and remain a statesman.
Oshiomhole gave the advice at an event to mark the 83rd birthday anniversary of Ogbemudia on Saturday in Benin.
The
governor said Ogbemudia at 83 deserved a rest as his legacies as former
civilian and military governors were enough reference points.
According
to Oshiomhole, there is nothing more for Ogbemudia, than be our father
and continue to pray for the success of those governing the state.
He
noted that the celebrator’s contributions to the development of the
state in particular and the country in general had remained immeasurable
as he ruled the people with passion.
Describing
Ogbemudia as the founder of modern Bendel, Oshiomhole said that the
collective resources of the state were doggedly managed during his
tenure as head of affairs in the then mid western state.
He called for contributions from the elder statesman to enable government function well and succeed.
The governor urged him to rise beyond petty politics and contribute to the development of the state and country in general.
Oshiomhhole, who commended the Delta Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa
for his presence at the event, said that Okowa's presence was
significant, adding that irrespective of party affiliation both Edo and
Delta remain united.

THIEF DIES 'TWICE' IN HOSPITAL AFTER BEING STABBED IN STOMACH BY HOUSE OWNER
A thief 'died' twice in hospital after being stabbed in the stomach by
the owner of a house he had robbed.
The thief, 38 year old Craig Norman,
spent nearly six months in Manchester Royal Infirmary and is now facing
the threat of being jailed.
The courts heard how he used a spring-loaded punch to get into the home of 44 year old Lee Fellowes and his wife Kelly, 33.
Mr Fellowes went into the kitchen of their home after hearing the sound of smashing glass and when he looked towards the front door he saw a hand reaching for a bunch of keys in the lock, said prosecutor Subhanur Chowdhury. He kicked out at the hand but Norman managed to grab the keys and disappear.
So Mr Fellowes went back into the house and that was when he saw his wife struggling with a masked man dressed all in black and armed with a hammer.

He pulled the knife out of the man’s body and it fell to the ground.”Despite his serious injury, Norman managed to escape and on reaching home was covered in blood, it was said.
In court, Maggie McCormack, who is Mr. Norman's lawyer, said “Norman suffered a life endangering wound. And after being admitted to the MRI twice died. He does have a record but he takes issue with some of the evidence against him.”Norman, she said, pleaded guilty to burglary and the theft of keys valued at £50. He was bailed and due to appear at the Crown Court for sentence on October 6.

OKADA RIDER VIOLENTLY RAPES 14 YEAR OLD GIRL IN LAGOS
According to a report by Punch, the teenager, currently an apprentice at her aunty’s cake shop was a virgin, until she lost it violently to the okada rider. (pictured rigft after he was caught and beaten)
The teenager who was visibly and emotionally in pain said she'd never forgive her rapist, identified as Sharafa Wasiu, for violating her, she also wished him death, “because of what he did to me. I feel sad anytime I remember that day.”
She said she had tried everything she could to remain a virgin until she was married but all that was for naught after being raped by Wasiu who after dropping her infront of her house, trailed her into the house and raped her in broad daylight.
She said, “That Saturday, I stopped a bike from the front of our shop to take me home. When we got home, he dropped me in front of the house, I paid him and I went in, not knowing he was still lurking around. I thought he had left, not knowing that he wheeled his motorcycle to the side of the house and stayed there, watching me. It was about 2pm. “My aunty had told me to help her clean her shoes, so the moment I entered, I started packing the shoes outside so I could clean them. I used the kitchen entrance and I closed it when I packed the first round. “When I was in the room packing the remaining shoes, I heard the sound of the door and I asked who was there. I didn’t hear anything, so I went to check who or what was there. The next thing I saw was the okada man that dropped me a short while ago.
“Immediately, he pushed me to the floor with so much force, overpowered me, being a taller and more hefty person, he pulled my skirt and pants and raped me. I struggled with him but I didn’t succeed. Apart from the pain from the forceful entry and the terrible smell oozing out of his body, he was rubbing my body against the floor, inflicting serious injuries on my body. I kept shouting but nobody heard me because I was the only one at home.”She explained that after she was raped the first time, she thought her nightmare was over not knowing she was in for more assault.
She said:
“When he finished, I pushed him away, pulled up my skirt and ran to the door to escape. I barely opened the door when he suddenly ran after me, pushed me and pinned me to the floor. I was gasping but he tore all my clothes, leaving me stark naked, and dragged me on the floor, trying to take me inside so he could rape me again. I can never forgive him for what he did to me. “By that time, blood was all over my body. I kept shouting but there was no one to rescue me.
As he was trying to remove his trousers, I managed to escape (naked) and I ran through one side of the house while he ran through the other side to get me. That was how one of our neighbours saw me and quickly called on others who mobilised to the place at once and caught him. They also seized his bike.”Her aunty felt guilty for what happened to the teenager, she said
“Usually we don’t work on Saturday but that day, we went for an event. When we finished, I went somewhere and I sent her to go and give some food items to my attendants in the shop. I told her to go back home after that. And she did.
“We moved into that house about three months ago. It’s located around Onolu Road, Igbe in Ikorodu, while my shop is around Medical Road. When I heard about the incident, I rushed home and met them, but the boy, who claimed to be 23 years old, kept denying it. He was even making calls and threatening to call his guys who would deal with us. With the help of the security men on our street, we dragged him to the Igbogbo police station.
“It was at the police station that he confessed. He said it was the devil’s work and that he only made an attempt to do it but did not do anything. The shreds of Esther’s clothes are still with the police. He confessed that he parked his motorcycle beside the house and stayed inside the compound for about 10 minutes before he went inside. “They took our statement and gave us a letter to go to the General Hospital for test. She did series of tests, which confirmed that she was raped. I wish the incident didn’t happen because even the parents of this girl are not yet aware. I want them to come to Lagos before I tell them. It’s not the kind of news one could share on the phone.” Felicia pointed out that the girl had been on drugs since the incident happened and that she had been a recluse.A police source confirmed that Wasiu had been charged to court exactly three days after and was being remanded in the Kirikiri prison on the order of the court. The source added that “the matter would come up for hearing sometime in October.”

Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Sadique Abubakar, has issued a stern warning to Boko Haram insurgents.
Abubakar, gave Boko Haram the choice of surrendering, or being confronted with the full might of the Army.
“My message to the insurgents is simple; it is either they give up their insurgency or they are going to face the force. We are putting together everything in place and we hope that they will keep to this advice and surrender their arms.
“They can come up so that we can bring this operation to an end, if not, the consequences will be terribly unbearable.”
“The deadline has been set and we are going to achieve that deadline. It is not only an Air Force war; it is a war that is jointly fought by all the forces.”
“Our responsibility is to make it easy for the surface forces to move around to conduct their operation without any hindrance and that is exactly what we have been doing.
“It is a very coordinated operation between the air elements and the land elements and that is why we are beginning to see the result of that coordination.”
5 THINGS WE LEARNT FROM CHELSEA VS ARSENAL
Chelsea recorded its first home win of the season on Saturday, when it defeated 9-man Arsenal, 2-0 at the Stamford Bridge.
Here are 5 things we learnt from the encounter:
If Chelsea had somehow lost the match, it would have been utter disaster. Forget the fact that they beat lowly Maccabi Tel Aviv at home in mid-week, this was the one that mattered. The last time in the League, Crystal Palace ran away with all three points. And it was very important they won today. It remains to be seen how they fare in subsequent matches.

Like I said on Twitter, Gabriel Paulista was rather silly to get himself sent off. Diego Costa is a dirty player and will pull and scratch at opposing defenders. But take the case of Delaney last week, who dealt comfortably with the Spain international. It’s always a two-way result: either he loses the battle or you fall for his trap.
Dean nightmare
Officiating has been quite horrendous from last season and today was another case. Mike Dean somehow missed Costa trying to take out Laurent Koscielny’s eyes, but spotted the little kick out from Gabriel on the striker. He always looked pressured from the Chelsea players and missed another chance to send off Costa in the second half.
