Police comb Lagos, Abuja for Boko Haram members

A Joint Task Force team comprising the personnel of the police, Department of State Services, the military and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has been combing the Federal Capital Territory, Lagos and other towns for Boko Haram suspects and their sponsors. It was learnt that the Task Force, which was set up by the Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, had been mandated to carry out massive operations against the sect members who were suspected to have infiltrated different parts of the country.

The DSS had on Friday, arraigned in court, about 45 terror suspects who were arrested for plotting to bomb Dolphin Estate in Lagos. The suspects were subsequently remanded in KiriKiri prisons by an Isolo Magistrate Court. As part of the operation to apprehend fleeing terror suspects, the Task Force last Wednesday, raided a black spot at Nyanya, a satellite town in the FCT, where it arrested about 30 suspects. Nyanya and Kuje, FCT recorded twin bomb blasts on October 2, 2015, in which about 20 people lost their lives and many others were injured.

Our correspondent gathered that the Task Force was ‘processing the suspects’ after which identified terrorists among them would be made to face the law. The Force Public Relations Officer, Olabisi Kolawole, told our correspondent on Saturday that the Task Force was set up to go after fleeing Boko Haram insurgents, adding that the team has been carrying out operations in different parts of the country. She cited the operation at Nyanya operation as one of the activities of the team, adding that it was based on intelligence reports.

Kolawole explained that the operation was part of strategies to prevent the committing of crime by criminal elements in the FCT, adding that the raid to apprehend terrorists would continue nationwide.

“The Task Force was set up by the IG to go after fleeing Boko Haram members and their sympathisers and supporters wherever they may be found. The team has started working and its operations are yielding fruits already as they have been able to apprehend some criminal elements who are being processed, as we speak,” she stated.

She added that the IG had also set up a special intelligence team tasked with getting intelligence and information on terror plots in the country. It was learnt that the intelligence team successfully arrested the masterminds of the Nyanya and Kuje bombings, five of whom were picked up in different parts of the FCT in Iddo village and Karamajiji, along Airport Road, and Gaulaka area in Suleja, Niger State.

The suspects—Abdulazeez Muhazab, Ishaka Salihu, Mohammed Jimoh, Abdulwaheed Nasiru and Abdullahi Nasiru were arraigned at the Federal High Court, Abuja last Thursday on five-count charges bordering on terrorism, conspiracy, accessory to acts of terrorism and act preparatory to an act of terrorism.

One of them pleaded guilty to terrorism.

Fulani Herdsmen: Falana threatens to drag Buhari to court if killings continue

A Senior advocate, Mr Femi Falana, Sunday, called on President Muhammadu Buhari “to address the bloody clashes which occur regularly between farmers and Fulani herdsmen in the various parts of the country.

He said, “through the negligence of the State the country has continued to witness the reckless killing of innocent farmers and the destruction of farmlands. Farmers, like other citizens, are entitled to the protection of the right to life and property.”

To halt the alleged wanton killings by Fulani herdsmen, Falana said: “the primitive movement of thousands of heads of cattle from the north to the south should be stopped without any further delay.

“In the interim, States which have large livestock populations should take advantage of the Land Use Act to acquire land for the establishment of grazing reserves.

“In view of the increasing incident of cattle rustling, security measure should be put in place to police the grazing reserves. The said grazing reserves will be phased out gradually and replaced with ranches and abattoirs.

“However, since the federal government is obligated to protect the life and property of every citizen urgent steps should ve taken to avert further killings and destruction of farmlands by herdsmen.

“If the Buhari Administration does not discharge its constitutional duty by stopping the unwarranted civil disturbances we shall not hesitate to pray the federal high court to compel it to act responsibly in the circumstance by ensuring the protection of the fundamental rights of every farmer to life and property.

“At the same time, we shall equally ask the Court to compel the federal government and state government with large livestock populations to establish grazing reserves and ranches,” he added.

The thriving hard drug trade in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory  (FCT) Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) may need to intensify its effort at ridding Abuja of hard drugs that is now being sold in every nook and cranny of the city.

There has been an increase in drugs and substance abuse nationwide especially amongst teenagers and young adults aged with no exception.

World Health Organization (WHO) describes drugs and substance abuse as “the harmful or hazardous use of psychoactive substances, including alcohol and illicit drugs”.

It also refers to a condition in which a person consumes the substance in quantities or with procedures which are not approved or monitored medically.

Substance and drugs abuse encompasses the use of “mood-altering or psycho-active drugs; illicit drugs – narcotics; stimulants; depressants (sedatives); hallucinogens; cannabis; glues and paints, substance abuse often includes problems with impulse control and impulsive behaviour”.

They either stimulate or depress the central nervous system and produce sedative, stimulants, hallucinogenic, exhilarative, brain dysfunctional physical and psychological disorders on an individual The twist to the sale of hard drugs in Abuja is that it has gone beyond the era when peddlers carried out their trade with fear.

Small shop owners have been introduced into the business. Customers openly visit the shops, Sunday Vanguard investigation revealed One wrap of marijuana, it was found, is sold between N20 and N50, depending on the area of the nation’s capital city.

Codeine syrup, which ordinarily should be sold to patients based on doctors’ prescription is now sold by owners of small shops, popularly referred to as kiosks. It was unclear how the  shop owners get their supply, but they readily have the products available for any customer who discreetly walks into their shops to buy.  Just recently, a 34-year-old man was arrested by the police in Kubwa for allegedly selling Codeine and other hard drugs to residents of the satellite town.

The suspect, identified as Kelechi, posed as a patent medicine dealer. He was apprehended with two of his customers while dispensing the drugs to the customers, mostly teenagers, in his shop located at Kukwaba area.

Sunday Vanguard learnt that nemesis caught up with him when one of his customers, a teenager who succumbed to pressure from his father, revealed the identity of the (suspected) drug dealer.

The source added that after showing the father the shop, the father alerted the police who immediately visited the shop and arrested the suspect.

“Two of the police officers in mufti entered the shop, pretending they were there to buy drugs and, as soon as he brought out the drugs, they got him arrested together with two of his customers.”

A carved out red light zone in the heart of Kubwa district, popularly referred to as Woman Boku, could compete  with the Soho London red light district, an area inhabited by commercial sex workers, pimps, drug dealers, bars, and distinct night crawlers, in the drug game.

Woman Boku won its popularity owing to the  criminal activities carried out there.

A report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on drug activities in the FCT over a five-year period,  2010. – 2014, revealed seized 31,614.58kg of narcotic drugs and 475 suspects prosecuted.
The NBS report  indicated that 2013 recorded the highest number of drugs seized.

In that year, NDLEA confiscated 13,622kg of narcotic drugs, which was higher than 3,807.71kg seized in 2011. The report further showed that in 2012 and 2014, 5,094.30kg and 6,440.20kg of illegal drugs were seized, respectively.

There is cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, Indian hemp and a few others which bear criminal tags and as such banned from open sale and consumption. But no one will ever consider an ordinary cough syrup like Benylin or lizard faeces, inhaling the sting from sock away as among substances  categorized as ‘hard drug’.

Those lizards, captured alive, are  kept in cages, just like poultry farms and cattle ranches. They’re fed daily and their dung collected, dried and kept. The users then blend the dung and rap it in small papers for use. While some users inhale the blended dung, others smoke it like marijuana. The intoxicating effect of the dung is believed to be 50 percent higher than marijuana and cocaine.

Although, lizard dung has not officially been banned by relevant agencies of government, there are strong indications that it could turn into a multi-million Naira industry with the potential of selling the ‘finished products’ at robust prices. The demand for tit on the streets of Nigeria’s major cities, particularly Abuja, has beaten the standard set by cocaine addicts. The abuse of the substances got so alarming that the Federal Government banned the sale of Benylin with Codeine off the counter except with a medical doctor’s prescription.

Codeine is primarily used to treat mild to moderate pain and to relieve cough. It is also used to treat diarrhoea and diarrhoea predominant irritable bowel syndrome. The reality however is that the criminalization and high cost of the usual hard drugs listed above have in combination with other factors led to the discovery of other potent substances with similar stimulant and/or suppressant effects on the central nervous system by consumers of hard drugs especially teenagers.

Effort have  been made through the Nigerian Customs Services, Immigration and the police to checkmate the activities of drug-pushers/users. This onerous task, however, proved a Herculean task.

The Commander of the FCT Command of  NDLEA, Chinyere Obijuru has, in the meantime, called on Abuja residents to be alert to any possible existence of methamphetamine laboratories which, she disclosed, does not only pose risks to  users but also to residents.

Obijuru stated that the command plans to build a rehabilitation centre for drug addicts while soliciting the support for a land from  Abuja Geographic Information Systems (AGIS) to actualise its plan.
The FCT Permanent Secretary, Engr. John Obinna Chukwu, confirmed the seizure.

The Permanent Secretary revealed that the Task Team discovered the hard drugs in a depot during its covert operation at Tura-Bura, behind Apo Roundabout.

Killing of Taraba monarch in Mecca stampede sparks trouble

Subsequently, the governor, through his Permanent Secretary Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Bello Yero, employed all means to ensure a hitchfree emergence of a new Kpanti Zing.

But when it became glaring that the king makers were unable to present the three contenders to the Taraba government which would, in turn, choose one to occupy the throne as provided for by the law, the governor directed the Permanent Secretary to announce acting Kpanti Zing.

Yero, in a three-paragraph press release, announced: “His Excellency, the governor of Taraba State, Arch. Darius Ishaku, has directed that the Waziri Sir Linus D. Ibrahim should act in the office of Kpanti Zing in line with the traditions guiding the traditional stool of Kpanti Zing”. He stated that the state government was putting the machinery in place  on the election of a new Kpanti Zing. The state government also Imposed 12 hours (6 pm to 6 pa) curfew on the town, the headquarters of Zing local government area to ensure law and order.

Orju Kalu is very qualified to be FIFA President – Sepp Blatter

Sepp Blatter, who’s been suspended as FIFA President, has backed Nigerian billionaire-politician, Orji Uzor Kalu, to succeed him at the helm of world football. Blatter, who’s facing corruption charges, has thrown his weight behind Orji Kalu, who also has a case with the Economic and Financial Commission, Nigerian anti-graft agency.

The long-serving FIFA President announced his support for Orji Kalu on Sunday, while speaking on a Zurich-based radio station. Blatter said the former governor of Abia state possesses the needed amount of contacts and required experience to take up the role of FIFA President.

“The position of the FIFA president is too important to be left to just anybody. I have heard of some candidates who want to take over from me. But I find the Businessman from Nigeria Kalu very qualified and interesting because he is not only a businessman, but a politician with lots of contacts and corporate experience. He can bring his great experiences to bear in the running of world football.

He is passionate about the game. I remember how he sponsored one of Nigerian clubs to win the CAF championship twice. He is a man that can take world football to the next level.”

“If Africa hopes to win the support of other federations, then they must queue behind the Nigerian business man. Football has developed beyond just anybody taking over.

I sacked Jerome Champgne in 2010 so how can he come back to lead an Association he tried to destroy. You need a man who can command respect and win friends for football. With Kalu Africa stands a better chance.”

The famed literary icon revealed this at the formal inauguration of The Wole Soyinka Foundation, a retreat haven for writers. Soyinka said the book- ‘InterInventions, Between Defective Memory and Public Lie, A Personal Odyssey in The Republic of Liars’- is the nastiest thing he’s ever written.

The Nobel Laureate stated that it was unfortunate that public lies have become a fast-growing industry that is made even more popular with social media. He said: “(InterInventions), it is the nastiest book I have ever written. It is so truthful that it hurts… it is my vengeance against public lies. It is not one of the butterfly books. No, it is not a butterfly book.

“I want to draw blood (with it). I’m warning all of you, if you feel vengeful, read this book and you will be alright. It is like homeopathic medicine.”

Soyinka added that there is the need for a “ritual of public purgation where both sides – such victims of lies and the traducers, are brought together before the public tribunal for the world to know the truth.”
