A
Makurdi Magistrates’ Court in Benue State on Tuesday remanded an 18-year old
student, Clement Odike, in prison for alleged rape of a six-year-old girl.
The Prosecutor, Insp James
Zungwe, told the court that the mother of the victim reported the matter at the
'D' Division Police Station in Makurdi on August 25. The prosecutor alleged
that the accused, who resides behind St. Augustine Catholic Church, Demekpe,
Makurdi, dragged the victim into the bush.
The
victim, the prosecutor said, was attacked while she was going home in company
with her friends on Demekpe road. Zungwe said the accused pushed
the victim to the ground, closed her mouth with his hand and forcefully had
sexual intercourse with her.
The
prosecutor told the court she sustained serious injuries on her private part as
a result of the attack, saying the offence was punishable under Section 284 of
the Benue State Penal Code Law, 2004. The prosecutor, however,
prayed for an adjournment as the matter was still being investigated.
The Magistrate,
Mrs Lillian Tsumba, who did not take the plea of the accused, adjourned the
matter till October 8, for further mention.
