STOWAWAY ARRESTED IN LAGOS AIRPORT

A 25-year-old man was found inside the tyre compartment of a Ghana-bound Medview Airlines plane at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, on Wednesday, it was learnt.

Eye witnesses said the stowaway was found by the pilot during his final check on the plane before its departure to Accra, Ghana.

The incident happened at the departure wing of the MMA2 at about 7.30pm. The identity of the young man could not be determined as of the time of filing this report.

It was learnt that he confessed to the act during interrogation by police detectives from the Airport Command of the Nigerian Police Force.

He reportedly told police investigators that he was frustrated and wanted to leave the country for a greener pasture by all means.

When asked how he managed to find his way into the tyre compartment of the aircraft, the stowaway said he jumped the perimeter fence of the airport to gain access into the MMA2 tarmac.

The spokesman for the NPF, Airport Command, Mr. Alabi Joseph, did not pick calls made to his telephone line. However, a top police officer at the command, who as not authorised to speak on the matter, confirmed the incident.

He said the stowaway had been transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department of the command for further investigations.

An official of Medview Airlines also confirmed the incident to our correspondent under condition of anonymity.

Stowaways had been found in Delta Airlines, Arik Air and other carriers in the past. Developments in recent weeks had revealed the porous state of security at the nation’s airports.
