Sunderland have terminated Adam Johnson’s contract with immediate effect, following his admittance of guilt to one charge of sexual activity with a child under 16 and another count of grooming.
Johnson is on trial for sexual activities with a child in relation to incidents between December 2014 and February 2015, and even though he has admitted to one count of sex, he denies two counts of sex with a child under sixteen.
It was later confirmed, Johnson will miss the match against United in the weekend, with Sunderland taking further action by terminating the winger’s contract. A statement from the club read: “In light of Adam Johnson’s guilty pleas, the club has today terminated his contract with immediate effect.”
It was also revealed on Thursday that Adidas had brought an end to their sponsorship with Johnson.
Johnson had initially been suspended by Sunderland following his arrest in March, but upon having his bail extended by Durham Police, Johnson was cleared to return to training later that month and remained in the first-team picture until the latest developments in the case.
