Boko Haram Survivors Narrate Ordeal

The Boko Haram survivors who escaped from the terrorists’ main base, also known as Markaz placed in Sambisa forest, have narrated their ordeal.

Nigerian troops have rescued 338 people from Boko Haram Islamists.

They said that the insurgents have been deteriorated and are in anguish with only one safe route left for them to run from the army onslaught in the forest.

Daily Trust reports that one of the captives that survived in the camp of the militants said: “I have been with them (insurgents) for a very long time. How I survived under them all this while only calls for thanksgiving. We knew when they were going out for operation and returned with stories of destructions they did. Though General Buratai has never gone beyond Konduga this way, the news of his frequency to Borno has left the insurgents worried.

“The most terrifying news to the Boko Haram insurgents was when they learnt that President Buhari gave soldiers December deadline to end the war. The insurgents knew that the soldiers will do everything possible to flush them out.

“There was a time the soldiers increased operations in Sambisa and the insurgents ran from Markaz through Pirgi to Banki axis hoping to enter Cameroon but the Cameroonian soldiers had sealed up their border.

“All the insurgents that ran towards Banki had given up that they will be crushed by the Nigerian soldiers because they thought the Pirgi route would have been blocked. But they ran back to Markaz through Pirgi. If the soldiers can block that Pirgi route then attack Sambisa and the bushes around Banki, I am not sure there will be no insurgent left.

“Since Buhari became president, whenever there is news of planned attack on Sambisa, the Boko Haram insurgents around Markaz will always run towards Banki through Pirgi and stay away for some time. The insurgents knew that there are soldiers around Damaturu road or when running towards Konduga. Of recent, they have been kind with the captives in the forest may be because they are planning to use us as shield,” he said.

Some other survivors that escaped from the forest added that the Boko Haram sect is very much aware of the December deadline given to the army by Buhari to crush the insurgency and are ready for what they always called the last fight.

President Buhari gave three-month deadline to newly appointed service chiefs.

Malam Goni Musa (not real name), one of the captives, said: “Some of these women and children you see are their wives and children. They asked them to leave the forest as a way of saving their lives because they have been told that soldiers are planning a big fight. Most of their fighters are now around Markaz. They are actually set for the fight. They know they cannot withstand the military. Their hope is the route through Pirgi that they can use to escape.

“I am an Islamic scholar. They have been consulting me for spiritual assistance. They did not know that I was planning to escape, they would have held me back or even killed me. Some of these escapees were actually told by the insurgents to leave. But some of us left without their consent. They are using motorcycles to patrol the bush and kill anybody they see trying to escape without approval.

“I do not know how they are getting their information, but they seem to be up to date with information about military operations in the area. They share some of the information with me. They told me that there is a military plane that goes about taking pictures with only one soldier inside (drone). They said the plane operating in Nigeria cannot shoot but that the one in Cameroon can snap pictures and shoot.

“They also told me that some Nigerian soldiers have been taken to Banki and stationed there. That at first, soldiers are going from Bama and Banki junction to Banki which makes the place very unsafe for them. But for some time now, there is no vehicular movement along Banki junction to Banki which makes the place safe for them. They said they have observed that helicopters shuttle between Bama and Banki now, may be to even supply food to troops.

The map of Borno state

“Yes, I noticed that the insurgents have lost hope in the fight. Just ask these soldiers they will confirm to you that so many insurgents have ran away from Sambisa and surrendered. That story is not a secret in Markaz.

“Those ones left behind know that their days are numbered. They may not surrender because of stubbornness or because of the belief they have that they are fighting a religious war. There are several old people and children that cannot trek from the bush that need to be evacuated. No, the insurgents are not holding them,” the Boko Haram survivor said.

Buhari when he was given that mandate as Nigeria’s President on his part did not mince words when he said that he would chase Boko Haram to anywhere and crush them out of the country. So as deadline to end Boko Haram to newly appointed cervices chiefs was long awaited.

If you are diabetic, don’t neglect your mouth

Except a miracle happens, diabetes is a life-long disease. The best way to avoid it is to prevent yourself from developing it. But then, if you have the condition, there’s no sitting down and wishing it never happened or indulging in self-pity. Physicians say once an individual is confirmed as being diabetic, the best thing s/he can do is to enroll for medical care under a competent doctor in order to prevent complications from setting in.

Diabetologist/Medical Director of Rainbow Specialist Hospital, Dr. Afokoghene Isiavwe, warns that diabetes is not a condition that any individual can manage at home. Rather, she says, it’s a life-long condition that needs expert, life-long care if the patient must live quality life.

Isiavwe says diabetes comes with sack loads of issues which, if well managed, may not result in life-threatening complications. Of course, having diabetes is life-threatening enough, experts lament; but they are quick to say that if you take practical steps by accessing good care, you can reduce the complications for which diabetes is notorious.

What is diabetes?

Isiavwe says an individual is said to be diabetic when the amount of glucose in the blood is too high because the body cannot use it properly. Blood flows through every part of the body, because it is the fuel that keeps us alive. The day blood-flow to an organ ceases, that organ dies, literally.

The body needs healthy, untainted blood, to function optimally. But because of too much sugar in the blood — which causes diabetes in the first place — the body is inhibited from functioning properly.

Diabetes is one ill health that courses through the entire body because it resides in the blood. As such, it is capable of taking along every organ and nerves in the body in its downward trend.

Isiavwe says when diabetes complications set in, they could affect the eyes (retinopathy), heart (cardiovascular disease), kidneys (nephropathy), and nerves and feet (neuropathy).

But an important part of the body that this condition also affects is the mouth.
General Practitioner, Dr. Ireti Majebi, says diabetes puts you at risk for dental problems.
“It impairs the body’s ability to fight bacteria in your mouth. High blood sugar encourages bacteria to grow and this largely contributes to gum disease,” Majebi notes.

Gum disease is easy to diagnose because the symptoms are unmistakable, experts say.
Symptoms include red gums that are sore, bleeding, or swollen. Sometimes, the condition makes the gum to pull away from the teeth, leading to loose teeth. Indeed, if you dither too much about your care, you may lose substantial number of teeth, or possibly become toothless!

Of course, the possibility of developing chronic bad breath is also there, making you socially obnoxious to those who come near you. Nobody wants this, hence the need to take care of your mouth the way you monitor you blood sugar.

Dental care is a must

The average Nigerian doesn’t see the need to visit a dentist; and in a lifetime, an individual may not have had a professional examine his teeth. A diabetic person doesn’t have this ‘luxury.’

Professor of Conservation Dentistry at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Oluniyi Olusile, counsels a diabetic person to get dental check-ups at least twice a year.

The truth is that diabetes puts you at a higher risk of fungal infections such as thrush and mouth sores. These conditions don’t heal easily, experts warn, hence the need to prevent them from occurring at all. Worse, experts say, is the fact that mouth infections in diabetics put them at higher risks of developing heart disease, such as high blood pressure and abnormal cholesterol.

Olusile says once your dentist knows that you are diabetic, he knows the relevant oral care to provide, and it will definitely include professional cleaning that will rid your mouth of infection; while your physician will also give you the nitty-gritty of at-home oral self-care.

Most people only clean their teeth in the morning, though dentists would have us do it twice daily: first thing in the morning and last thing before we sleep. However, a diabetic can’t limit teeth cleaning to once daily. Rather, physicians say, you must endeavour to brush your teeth twice daily, so as to control the possibility of oral infection that can happen because of high blood sugar.

Of course, smoking is bad for everyone; but when you are diabetic, it is a no-go area!
Olusile says in the case of a diabetic person, tobacco use can damage gum tissue and cause receding gums; just as it can also speed up bone and tissue loss, leading to teeth loss, facial disfigurement and the attendant social stigma.

To prevent all these, don’t smoke; and if you already do, stop smoking.

Eat healthy

Under normal circumstances, your food passes through your mouth before it reaches your stomach and, eventually, every part of your body.

That is why you must eat balanced diet that will not only make for steady blood sugar level, but which will not allow bacteria to colonise your mouth.

Nutritionists say much of our traditional foods are okay for you if you eat them in proper combination of carbohydrates, protein and fats; and also if you reduce the quantity.

However, you are warned against indulging in sticky and sugary foods such as ice cream, yoghurt or sweets. In short, if you are diabetic, processed (fast) foods are not for you.

But then, we are human. So, if ever you do eat any of these foods, brush your teeth properly afterwards.

Five Lagos policemen arrested for torturing journalist, others

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested five policemen attached to the anti-robbery section of the State Department of Criminal Investigation, Yaba, over the abduction and torture of a journalist, Femi Owolabi, and others.

PUNCH Metro had reported on Monday that Owolabi and about 30 others were abducted by the policemen who embarked on an illegal raid near a night club in the FESTAC area of the state. The victims were conveyed in three blue buses to the SDCI and tortured for several hours.

The report subsequently drew the ire of human rights activists who demanded the prosecution of the culprits.
Following the PUNCH publication, the Force headquarters tendered an apology to Owolabi. The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, also gave the Lagos State Police Commissioner, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, 48 hours to fish out the culprits.

Police investigations revealed that the errant cops were attached to D9 (anti-robbery section) at the SDCI. The cops, it was learnt, would be given an orderly room trial to determine if they would be dismissed or not.
The Lagos CP confirmed to our correspondent that the policemen had been arrested.

“I can confirm to you that the policemen have been detained over the incident and investigations are ongoing,” he said.

He told PUNCH Metro that the command would not tolerate human rights abuses, as he had directed the Officer in Charge of the section to produce the list of the policemen on the raid.

The CP added that the Deputy Commissioner of Police, SDCI, was personally in charge of the investigation.
The Lagos police boss said he had interrogated the senior police officer that led the raid and had checked the list of those arrested on the fateful day.

He, however, said Owolabi’s name was not seen on the list. He, therefore, urged the journalist to come to see him in his office as soon as possible in order to assist with investigations.

The CP said, “I have asked the OC of D9 to identify the operatives who went to FESTAC Town on that raid. I also met with the team leader of the raid yesterday (Monday) who explained his own part.

“He showed me the list of people raided at FESTAC. I do not know whether the journalist gave another name, but there was no Owolabi on that list.

“The DC, SDCI, had called the journalist to assist the police with investigation, and to ask him to identify the policemen involved. The public can be assured that the command will not tolerate human rights abuses.”

However, Owolabi told our correspondent on the telephone that he gave his name to the policemen, adding that the cops who embarked on the illegal raid were not less than 10. He had, in the Monday report, identified one of them simply as Isiaka.

The Deputy Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Abayomi Shogunle, said the Force headquarters was still awaiting the report from the Lagos State CP.

He added that the report would determine further actions.
He said, “The directive from the Force Headquarters is that the CP of Lagos State should investigate and submit a report to the headquarters within 48 hours and that limit has yet to elapse.

“It is when the report from Lagos comes in that you can get updates from the Force headquarters.”

‘PDP thugs’ attacked, injured APC members – Timipre Sylva

The candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the upcoming governorship election in Bayelsa, Timipre Sylva, claims that members of his party were attacked and injured by hoodlums suspected to be supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party.

His campaign group, Sylva/Igiri Campaign Organisation (SICO) urged the police in the state to investigate the development and arrest those behind the attack. Director, SICO, Nathan Egba released a statement on Wednesday, saying the APC supporters were attacked due to the desperation of Governor Seriake Dickson.

“We call on the state Commissioner of Police to bring to book those PDP thugs who attacked and injured about four APC women and a driver of one of the evacuating trucks at Amarata and Tombia areas of Yenagoa, with one of the trucks set ablaze and another’s windscreen smashed.

“The Women and Youth wings of the Campaign Organization were on a rescue mission to help the PDP-led administration perform one if its statutory functions of clearing refuse at various dump sites when they were attacked.

“It is, therefore, unacceptable that apart from attacking the women, the PDP thugs burnt down one of our trucks at the Tombia dump site and smashed the windscreen of another truck at Amarata area of Yenagoa.

“It is regrettable that the Bayelsa State Government that should ordinarily protect its people had turned out to unleash terror on the citizens, because of the desperation of Governor Seriake Dickson to secure second term in office, which has clearly become a mirage.”

Uwazuruike will be the happiest man – MASSOB

The Movement for the Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, has ascribed the recent criticism of the group by former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, to Ralph Uwazuruike’s betrayal and deviation from the Biafran struggle.

Obasanjo had recently described the Biafran struggle as an avenue to defraud people and make money.
However, Uchenna Madu, factional National Director of Information, MASSOB, said the struggle for Biafra, although genuine, has been tainted by the activities of Uwazuruike, who has sold-out for money.

Madu said Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of Independent People of Biafra, IPOB, and Director, Biafra Radio, unlike Uwazuruike, was determined to actualise the objectives of the Biafran state.

He released a statement to this effect on Monday:

“After our monthly National Officers’ meeting at MASSOB headquarters at Freedom House, Okwe, we have decided as follows: Olusegun Obasanjo’s assertion that Biafran activists are fraudsters and General Gowon’s statement that Biafra is a closed issue, were all made because of their conviction on Ralph Uwazuruike’s betrayal and deviation on the Biafran struggle because of his lust for wealth, compromising nature, open political romance and public association with Nigerian government during the Jonathan administration.”

“MASSOB condemns the hypocritical call of Ralph Uwazuruike for Nnamdi Kanu’s release. Uwazuruike hates Nnamdi Kanu and celebrates his detention because he is jittery that Nnamdi Kanu has taken over the mainstream of Biafra actualization, which attracts major international sympathies.”

“Uwazuruike will be the happiest man if Nnamdi Kanu is dead. Uwazuruike, who claimed that he expelled Nnamdi Kanu from the struggle is making a caricature of himself and his MASSOB faction. MASSOB also condemns the sudden wake-up of Ralph Uwazuruike to establish another Radio Biafra to counter the current Radio Biafra broadcasting all over the world.”

“This Uwazuruike’s Radio, which he levied N250, 000 on each local government area of his followers in the South East, Rivers, Delta and some western states, through which he raised about N70 million, has been diverted to another  personal venture.

“Since June 2015, the money meant for establishment of Uwazuruike’s Radio Biafra has been raised; why is his radio not on air? What is still holding the operation of the radio? On which project has the money been diverted to? Can Uwazurike explain to Ndigbo and his brainwashed members what happened to the N70 million? This is another fraud in the name of Biafra actualization.”

“We will expose all the fraud and criminalities Ralph Uwazuruike committed in the name of Biafra as well as all the houses, hostels, estates and hotels he built, bought and still constructing in Owerri, Lagos and Abuja.”
“Nnamdi Kanu was not suspended or expelled by Ralph Uwazuruike or MASSOB; he left MASSOB in 2009 when Ralph Uwazuruike came to London to buy a personal mansion for his family.”
